Many fruits, natural as they may be, are high in sugar. The type of sugar in fruit is completely different than that in candy or a can of coke. The sugar that is in candy, soda, chocolate, etc is artificial sugar. Our bodies need natural sugar, just like they need good fat. That being said, there are some basic rules to be followed when it comes to eating fruit.
EAT FRUIT IN THE MORNING & EARLY AFTERNOON
If you are trying to lose weight, avoid eating fruit that is high in sugar after lunchtime/noon. Eating fruit for breakfast allows you the rest of the day to burn the sugar off. I eat the most amount of fruit first thing in the morning when I make my breakfast smoothie. In my smoothie, I use frozen fruit (such as mixed berries), frozen greens, dates, and bananas. I prefer frozen berries and greens because they last much longer in my refrigerator and I don’t have to throw out food I didn’t eat. Food that is fresh goes bad so quickly that it is a shame to waste!
It is more than ok to put fruit in your afternoon or dinner salad; that will not make or break you. Just keep in mind you want to stay away from eating an entire bowl of fruit before bed. Besides the dietary effect of eating fruit so late, the sugar in fruit may keep you awake and make it more difficult to fall asleep.
EAT FRUIT BEFORE A WORKOUT
You never want to workout on an empty stomach. Bananas, for example, are perfect before a workout because they are full of digestable carbs and are packed with potassium.
