Decorating a Coffee Table

Coffee Table Books

Symmetry is everything. When decorating a room, I love things that look simple, organized, and sharp.

*I’m not sure if I am more obsessed with candles or coffee table books. I think I’ve spent a solid amount of money on both, eep!*

A coffee table isn’t anything without epic coffee table books. Coffee table books are so fun to buy because there are so many options.. fashion books, world travel spots, history books, photography books, food books. For timeless coffee table books, you’re gonna have to splurge just a little.

All of my coffee table books are about fashion, my favorite designers, or photographers. You want something that your guests are going to want to skim through through so you feel like your books are being used for more than just decoration. I think coffee books are quite personal.

I bought my first coffee table books this year when I finally made a mini-living room in my bedroom. After some research, I purchased the book Kate Moss created herself with the collaboration of a few creative directors. There are 8 unique covers for this book, shot by some of the best photographers in the world. The book I bought tracks her highly personal modeling career, showing her evolution from “the girl who is too short for modeling” to “the most iconic model in fashion history”.

My second purchase was The Little Black Jacket, a coffee-table book by Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld and fashion-icon Carine Roitfeld. The hardcover copy is pricey, but it is a Chanel coffee table book.. I mean! You will have that piece in your home forever.

Vanity Fair 100 Years showcases the best photographers, the best designers, the best illustrators. The book shows iconic images and some images that didn’t make it to publishing.

Candles, candles, candles..NOTHING sets the mood of a room like a candle. My mom always lit candles around my house growing up, and now I finally caught onto the obsession. I have a candle on my nightstand, coffee table, bathroom, and in my closet. You will never see a candle not lit if you walk into my room. But you have to be careful with lighting too many candles in one room because then the scents start to mix.

I like to put my prettiest candles like Diptyque, Le Labo Santal 26 Candle, and Jo Malone on display. I don’t always burn those, because I use them more as decoration.

My favorite smelling line of candles right now are Loree Rodkin. Loree Rodkin is one of my good family friends, and she gifted me some candles that I haven’t stopped burning. Gothic II is my favorite. I light it when the sun goes down and keep it burning until right before I fall asleep. It’s pricey, but burns for 50 hours, so it is totally worth it. I’m going to have to re-stock on my Loree Rodkin candles pretty soon.

Fresh flowers

While candles bring sexiness to a room, flowers bring life and color. A bouquet of any flower will instantly give a room life and happiness. I make sure that I pick up flowers in the beginning of the week. Spending $10 a week to have fresh flowers in your room is worth it. I use flowers as a statement piece because my room is white, dark grey, and black, so the colors can get boring. Pink or white roses give my room that touch of life it needs. Choosing a vase for your flowers can also be a decorative piece. I tend to go for clear, tall vases most of the time.

Modern Tray

Using a modern tray to organize things gives depth to a basic table. Stacking your favorite coffee table books, making sure they are all facing the same direction gives it a clean feel. Adding an object on top of your stacked books, like a candle, coral, or magnifying glass adds a little spunk. Its really up to you how you decide to decorate your coffee table. You will probably move things around and try new objects until you figure out exactly what works for your room. Screen Shot 2015-08-20 at 7.10.38 PM

While scrolling through Tumblr and Pinterest, I saw bowls full of matches on coffee tables for decor. Matches are the best way to light your candles and restaurants and hotels usually have adorable packaging. Next time you go to a nice restaurant or hotel, ask for matches and throw them into your purse. Once you have a few, choose a cute bowl in your house and place them in the bowl. You can use this bowl of matches as decor on your coffee table. After a while, you’ll have a unique collection of matches from all around the world.

I love your coffee table, but now I’m going to have to create one with a mix of Spencer’s and yours!
